#18 Dodge Daytona TEST DRIVE EV Conversion 1986 Electric Car Beat Gas Prices

by on 2010/10/03

Wow. Well the day has come when the Daytona left the garage. And it wasn't from me or anybody pushing it. I hit the switch and it left by itself on 12 volts. Then I took it for a spin around the yard, but the resistance from the snow proved to be a little much for just one battery. If I drive it with any higher voltage, I will probably be hooking up the controller though, because I don't think it's good for the contactor to be doing that. I found a new guy on the block, it sounds like he's been converting his Escort for a while but he just posted his first video last week. He is the youngest converter I know. He's got me beat by two years, he's 17. I encourage you to check Andrew out and subscribe to his videos. www.youtube.com/ajloder10 Here's the link to his first video: www.youtube.com Click here to visit my webpage! kylemeier.efoliomn1.com Ifyou like my videos be sure to check out Norm n2confusion, Blair lpgas1, Ed ZeroGasoline, Eric evric2008, and Gav cant7think7clearly. This project wouldn't be possible without these people's videos and help.

I had a helper back in the day, that used a coat hanger to bypass something for a 230v stage truss winch… think he still got groves in hes hand from the coat hanger… Some people just don’t think… at all…. EVER!

Oh my gosh haha please don’t tell me you found that out the hard way. No, I’d go buy some cable before I’d use coat hangers. lol I could totally see somebody doing that though.

Just don’t be tempted to use coat hangers…. (they usually have a very high internal resistance… in other words they get really hot…. FAST… as in an instant…)

lol yea 12 ga. wire was a very bad idea. I never would’ve started this project without proper education and experience wiring. When I begin wiring, once the voltage is over 36 volts, I’ll be wearing insulated gloves etc.

Moving at last !! Great work.

awg12 cable…. no wonder it was smoking… don’t think i have speaker wires that thin even…. ;-p No big danger in jerryrigging stuff on low voltage…. but be very very very very very careful when you start hocking up the actual battery pack…. If your not 100% sure about what your doing and how to do it, ask around in the appropriate forums. Over confidence only gets you zapped dead….

I haven’t bought cable yet; when the car is finished, I’ll be using 2/0 welding cable. I originally had the 12 ga. wire on there just to spin the motor with it on the floor of the garage. Dad and Jim had put in the motor when I was at college. When I saw it, I was so excited that I forgot all about the wire. next time I test I’ll probably have at least 4 12 ga. wires going across there.

Good work! I assume your just using that thin wire for testing….
Never the less id like to be overly redundant and suggest you get some oversize welding cable or something…
Ask the place you bought the motor and/or controller what AWG they recommend….

Keep it up… and have fun!

lol friday the 13th, your electric car started running…friday the 13th, my guitar stopped working…lucky day for you :P

kylehondarider October 3, 2010 at 6:46 AM

It’ll be 120 volts when finished. I’m using the Advanced DC L91-4003 and a Kelly KDH12400A 400 Amp Controller. I’m hoping for it to do about 60 MPH.

Way to go Kyle ! Can’t wait to see further tests. How many volts will there be when it’s ready?

I would be interested in converting my daytona too :)

Keep up the good work mate

kylehondarider October 3, 2010 at 8:24 AM

There will be 11 batteries total, 10 for the motor (120V) and one for the lights. I’m going to stuff as many batteries in the front as possible, probably between 6 to 8 under the hood.

Yesterday was so exciting for me. Today I’m working on fixing the brake lines.. Thanks for the comments!

Thats great man, must have been a rewarding first ride, no matter how slow haha. cant wait to see it run with the full battery rack. did you say you were doing 6 batteries? maybe that’ll be enough to compress the front down a little bit.

Congratulations! Big step forward!!
